Inside bike culture, but outside the bike game.

Ep. 19 - Sacrebleu! Tour wrap!

image

Welcome to episode 19 of The Slow Ride Podcast! This week we (finally) wrap up the Tour Of France coverage, and look back at the best and worst moments of the race.

We will also check in on the final result of our Velogames Fantasy Super League, and the highest placed among our hosts has prepared statements for the other two to read live on-air! Big fun!

It was a fun one to record and we think you will enjoy it!

Ep. 18 - Le Tour de Forever! Yes, it’s still going.

image

Hello, and welcome to the 18th episode of the Slow Ride Podcast!

This week we continue to drone on about the world’s biggest bike race, but we spice things up a bit with talk of campers, bowel movements, Sagan’s fashion, and French cycling!

We also get down to brass tacks about our Velogames Super League, and the race within the race among Spencer, Timmy, and LittleGuy. And as always, we touch on the best and worst in cycling for the week and we make some predictions about the tour as it enters the final week.

Ep. 17 - SPOILER ALERT! Le Tour, part Deux!

image

As we move into the second week of Le Tour, The Slow Ride Podcast tackles some of the biggest moments of drama from the first stages of the race with our vertically compliant (yet laterally stiff!) brand of analysis.

Some of this weeks topics include:

Paris Roubaix de France; Do cobbles have a place on the world’s biggest stage?

Froome and Wiggins and Sky, oh my!

The #TDFSelfie scourge! (and the time Chris Horner signed Tim’s jersey mid-race, after much badgering)

Is Littleguy anti-american? Or just a communist?

Can Andrew Talansky ride a bicycle: Y/N?

Tim spills about spoilers.

And in our own race-within-the-race, Spencer has moved into the lead of our Velogames Super League much to Tim’s dismay.

Ep. 16 - Le Tour de France avec The Slow Ride. Allez!

image

This week is all about the greatest show on earth, the Tour Of France! Don’t worry, we will get back to talk of gravel grinding soon enough, but for now we go in-depth with analysis on the most meaningful aspects of the TdF so far, such as:

Cavendish: Head butt, or butthead? You be the judge!

TdF Bikes, how light is too light?

Jens Voigt uses old-man-power to stay relevant in the TdF at 42, but what will he be remembered for? Super Rookie thinks he knows.

Velogames Slow Ride Super League competition update, week one! Tim leads, and we review all our hosts teams in-depth.

The All Important Cafe Stop

image

Customs are customs, tradition is tradition, and cafe stops are the essence of a life centered around cycling. We can help you do it right the first time.

We don’t like “The Rules”, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know the customs when visiting the cyclists favorite pit stop. Somethings are better passed down than learned the hard way. Don’t say we never did anything for you.

1. When to stop? This varies a lot on the type of ride, and the season. Obviously, you’ll stop sooner and probably for a lot longer on a cold winter ride, but for your average weekend summertime ride in general: 50 mile ride or more, stop around the halfway point. Less than 50, stop closer to the ⅔ mark. That way you can enjoy the banter, and still have a nice spin home. Try and keep your stop to less than 20 minutes.

2. What to order? You should be able to order your drink with one word. You are in the middle of a bike ride, skip the Iced Mint Mochaccino Shushie. Stick with the classics; Espresso, Americano. (even Coke). Cappuccino’s and Latte’s have too much milk and will take you too long to drink. This is a just a quick social break, treat it as such.

3. Food. Can/should you eat on a coffee stop? Sure! But be reasonable, don’t order a soup and sandwich. Remember, the ride isn’t over and if you overdo it you’ll be blowing chunks of that Croque Madame at about 100m before the next townline sprint. I suggest a biscotti, or fruit. A bagel or muffin can be fine if its a long ride, otherwise that probably too big. Eat a goo and STFU, you don’t need the calories anyway.

4. Logistics. Sit outside whenever possible. It’s nicer, and you won’t stink up the place more than necessary. That will make the baristas appreciate/tolerate you. There really isn’t anything that can destroy a pleasant indoor dining atmosphere quicker than 5 or 6 sweaty dudes. Always choose your stop based on patio quality. Always remember to fill your bottles.

5. Tip! You don’t want to carry a lot of stuff with you while you ride, I get it. Bring the essentials, ID, spare tube, pump, and enough cash for a coffee and a dollar tip. A slim wallet like the Thinfolio is perfect for this. If you order an espresso drink of any kind, the tip is $1. Drip coffee can be a handful of change, but you’re only ordering that on the longer winter stops anyway. Get in the habit of tipping properly. It’ll go a long way in making you friends at the cafe. Remember, it’s not just a coffee stop, you are filling water bottles, using the restroom, and refueling. It’s worth it to not have to carry TP and take a dump in the woods next to the bike path. Remember that.

Ep. 13: The Amateur Inhaler Edition

Pull out the inhaler, because you are going to need help to keep up with all the excitement of the 13th Episode. This week we take a look at bike lanes, inhalers, domestic pro bike racing (it exists), and what is the deal with amateur bike racers thinking they are pros?
